Remember when you needed ½-acre per ton and 8’ depth for a pond loop?

The Water Energy Analysis Program, or WEAP, is a design and analysis program used by our designers at Loop Group, Inc. to design pond/lake-coupled closed-loop geoexchange systems. WEAP is used for a number of details, including loop size and pond heat exchange predictions.

Now, instead of relying on “rules of thumb”, we can accurately size and analyze a pond loop in almost any situation. We have designed many pond loops, from 2-tons to 1500-tons, in the USA and overseas. By predicting how the pond reacts to the weather and geographical conditions, many loop systems are being installed in ponds/lakes where it just wasn’t possible based on the “rule of thumb”. For instance, the largest loop in the USA was designed by Loop Group, Inc. with the WEAP analysis. This loop was Great River Medical Center in Burlington, IA. Great River uses a 1500-ton loop system on a 12 acre lake! Great River Medical Center is a 707,000 sq. ft. building, with 800 heat pumps and a 100-mile-long piping system.
